he Foreign Office said it had summoned the Ambassador to express its “deep concern” at the violence.
London urged the authorities to act with “the greatest restraint”, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.
“We called in the Egyptian ambassador to express our deep concern at the escalating violence and unrest in Egypt,” a spokesman said.
Egyptian ambassadors to France and Germany were also called to similar meetings on Thursday.
Francois Hollande, the French president, said that “everything must be done to avoid a civil war,” and conveyed France’s “great concern over the tragic events.”
